This bill appropriates funds for agricultural research in Minnesota. Specifically, it allocates $75,000 for fiscal year 2026 and another $75,000 for fiscal year 2027 from the general fund to the Commissioner of Agriculture. These funds will be granted to the Minnesota Turf Seed Council for research on improving the production of forage and turf seed, including developing new seed varieties and studying aspects such as plant breeding, nutrient management, pest control, disease resistance, and yield improvement. The council is allowed to subcontract parts of its research to qualified third parties.

Additionally, the bill requires the Minnesota Turf Seed Council to submit a report detailing how the grant money was used and summarizing the research accomplishments. This report must be submitted by January 15, 2027, to the chairs and ranking minority members of the legislative committees overseeing agriculture finance and policy. Any unspent funds from the first year will be available for use in the second year.
