Main Provisions

• Exemption Criteria: Laboratories analyzing samples for compliance with a permit can request exemptions from national standards related to microbiology and chemistry. To be granted this exemption, laboratories must:

  • Adhere to the most current quality control methodologies from the "Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater."
  • Provide the name of a qualified person meeting specific personnel requirements under Minnesota state law or national standards.
  • Opt-out of applying for simultaneous accreditation under national standards when they apply for this exemption.

• Proficiency Testing Requirements: Laboratories seeking or holding accreditation under the specified exemption must:

  • Achieve acceptable proficiency test results for every testing field they are accredited for or applying to get accredited in.
  • Participate in two annual proficiency testing studies arranged by the commissioner and complete supplemental testing if needed.
