Main Provisions

• Curriculum Requirements: All school districts in Minnesota are required to provide CPR and AED instruction to students from grades 7 through 12. The teaching should involve psychomotor skills, meaning hands-on practice, to enhance learning and must be based on guidelines developed by recognized organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, or now, the Health and Safety Institute.

• Inclusion of Community Members: Schools are encouraged to involve community members, including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, police officers, firefighters, and organizations such as the Minnesota Resuscitation Consortium, to provide this training.

• Resource Provision: Community members are encouraged to provide training resources and CPR kits at no cost to the school districts.

• Exemptions and Waivers: Administrators can waive the curriculum requirement for high school transfer students or those who were absent on the day of instruction. Students with disabilities may also be eligible for exemption.
