The bill, S.F. No. 1460, allows school districts in Minnesota to renew an existing capital projects referendum through board action instead of requiring voter approval. If a school district wants to renew such a referendum, the following conditions must be met:

1. The amount of money raised by the new referendum should be the same as the one expiring.
2. The duration of the renewed referendum cannot be longer than the original voter-approved term.
3. The school board must hold a public meeting to discuss the renewal, after which they need to vote on it and pass a written resolution.
4. The referendum being renewed should not have been previously renewed by board action alone.

This process can be initiated up to two fiscal years before the existing referendum expires. The resolution for renewal needs to be adopted by June 15 of the year when the new levy begins and it takes effect 60 days later. The school district is required to inform the state commissioner and the county auditor about the renewal, as well as notify the commissioner about the results of any referendum votes.
